In just about every organization I’ve worked at, or consulted with, I tend to hear this phrase when I ask the question “Why is it done this way?”
“Well, that’s how we’ve always done it!”
When I hear that, I cringe. It is a mindset that is detrimental to the organization. This mentality tends to be wasteful, and in the long run, expensive. I have seen people fired over this because as change was coming, they fought, obstructed it or was a willing non-participant.
In order for an organization to be successful, employees, and management, need to embrace change. Not only embrace it, but improve on it. I once heard a phrase, “If you want to soar with the eagles, don’t hang around turkeys.” When I hear, “That’s How We’ve Always Done It,” I think of the turkeys. Everyone needs to be empowered to be a force in change within an organization.
Is it the culture of the company? Could these employees conform to change and continuous improvement? Or should they be terminated?
